Neil Gaiman reveals why Sandman recast Tom Ellis’ Lucifer for the new Netflix series

Tom Ellis played Lucifer Morningstar The devil, the network television series that was later saved from cancellation by Netflix. While The devil Now finished, Netflix remains in Lucifer’s business, in a way, via its upcoming adaptation of hypnotic, the beloved picture book series from Neil Gaiman. This series is where the later launched Lucifer version of his comic book series appeared, serving as the basis for the TV series – It’s a Connected World in the Comics. However, Netflix has cast new Lucifer, Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie, to play the character in hypnotic. On Twitter, Gaiman took the opportunity to explain why this decision was made, noting that Ellis’ Lucifer, by the time his series ended, had grown beyond the comics release.

“Because Lucifer, while inspired by Lucifer in Sandman, is so far removed from Sandman’s continuity by the end of LUCIFER that it’s easy for everyone to go back to the version in the comics,” Gaiman tweeted. “That way you don’t know what our Lucifer will do. Tom is lovable.”

Gaiman offered a similar explanation previously. He said via Tumblr, “Lucifer’s theology and cosmology is very far from Sandman. It’s Sandman-inspired, but you can’t easily modify Lucifer’s version to go back to Sandman, if you see what I mean. It seems easier and more interesting to have Sandman’s version of Lucifer is much closer to the Sandman version of Lucifer.”

In 2021, while talking to the press about Audible Sandman Adaptation, Gaiman explained that he’s approaching the Netflix show as if he’s writing Sandman For the first time in the twenty-first century. This includes updating the timeline, revisiting some storylines, and reimagining certain aspects of certain characters.

“[D]For the Netflix TV series, we often look at that as a continuation of, ‘Okay, it’s 2020, let’s say I was doing Sandman Starting in 2020, what will we do? How do we change things? What gender will this character be? Who is this person? What will happen? And they never worked because of all the special effects and what was needed to do the special effects. They never worked because you were making something adult. People were writing Sandman The script of the movie, and they go, “But it’s an R-rated movie, and we can’t get $100 million from rated movies.” So, this will not happen. I needed to get into a world where long storytelling is an advantage rather than a disadvantage. And the fact that we have seventy-five cases of Sandman Plus – basically, 13 whole books – the material’s value, is a really good thing. It is not a defect. It is in our favour. And the fact that we are in a world where we can take in things that were only in comic book art, that can now actually exist.”

hypnotic It will debut on Netflix in 2022. Netflix Geeked Week will show new details about the series when it airs from June 6 to June 10.
